What do you say?

Good Afternoon-

I know it's been a while since my last blog, but I thought that I would share this on behalf of our students expressing concerns regarding the outcome of the election based upon some of the verbiage used by President Elect Trump during the campaign:

What should I say to my students after the election if Trump wins?” a principal asked me recently. Good question. What should we tell our children?

Tell them, first, that we will protect them. Tell them that we have democratic processes in the U.S. that make it impossible for one mean person to do too much damage...

Tell them, second, that you will honor the outcome of the election, but that you will fight bigotry. Tell them bigotry is not a democratic value, and that it will not be tolerated at your school. Tell them you stand by your Muslim families...  Your gay students. Your Black families. Your female students. Your Mexican families. Your disabled students. Your immigrant families. Your trans students. Your Native students. Tell them you won’t let anyone hurt them or deport them or threaten them without having to contend with you first. Say that you will stand united as a school community, and that you will protect one another. Say that silence is dangerous, and teach them how to speak up when something is wrong. Then teach them how to speak up, how to love one another, how to understand each other, how to solve conflicts, how to live with diverse and sometimes conflicting ideologies, and give them the skills to enter a world that doesn’t know how to do this...

Teach them, third, how to be responsible members of a civic society. Teach them how to engage in discussion—not for the sake of winning, but for the sake of understanding and being understood. Students need to learn how to check facts, to weigh news sources, to question taken-for-granted assumptions, to see their own biases, to take feedback, to challenge one another. We need to teach students how to disagree—with love and respect..."

My hope is that this will provide some direction for us all as we continue to move forward in unity as a nation.

Thanks Khalida!

Teacher Collaboration Teams

Did you know that your OPRF teachers meet in professional learning communities- that we call teacher collaboration teams to talk about best practices across divisions that are helping students be successful?
Here is a pic from one of today's Teacher Leader sessions. Each team has a teacher leader that meets with colleagues from divisions across the school to talk about their work.
OPRF teachers are working incredibly hard to find ways to better support student academic growth! Most TCTs meet on late arrival Wednesdays.

Felony Franks at OPRF

Today I was invited to a presentation for our Reading Essentials classes during 3rd Period. Deno Andrews, 1989 alum and owner of Felony Franks, spoke to our students based upon an article they were reading about a company similar to Felony Franks, but out in LA called Homeboy Industry that hires individuals who have been incarcerated. Special thanks to Mr. Cohen for the invite!!!

My Sophomore English Teacher

I went back home a few weeks back and ran into my Sophomore English Teacher...Ms. Sitter from Elgin High School at a golf outing. I asked her if I can take a pic for my blog and she was cool with it.  I am grateful to still be in contact with her and be able to show appreciation to the adults that have helped me become the person I am today.  I hope that you are able to do the same OPRF!

Our Marching Huskies say....COME SEE US at a COMPETITION OPRF!

After school yesterday, I was presented with some Huskie Marching Band Swag by OPRF Drum Majors Maya Taylor, Abby Sacks, Gabe Krauter, and Lydia Woolley.  Besides providing me with the cool fleece I'm wearing in the picture, they also invited me to a few of their upcoming band competitions.  They mentioned that we as a school often
see them perform at football home games, but they feel that their competitions are when they are at their sharpest and most dignified.  I then thought to myself-  hey...how cool would it be for us to cheer on the very group that gets us all hyped and ready to go for all things OPRF...our Marching Huskies!  here are some of their upcoming events:

Geneseo Maple Leaf Classic, Geneseo High School: September 17th
NOHS Marching Band Classic, Benedictine University: September 24th, 4:30 PM
ISU Marching Band Competition, Illinois State University: October 22nd, 4:45 PM

It looks like the competition at Benedictine University next Saturday, September 24th might be the best time to catch them in competition.  I'm going to check in with the Huskie Spirit Council and see if we can get the Dawg Pound out there to root on our Marching Huskies!  It would be a great way for us to show our appreciation for our Band!
